Self-flagellation. Don’t beat yourself up over it.

May 4, 2023 ◊ By Sally DICESARE

Self-punishment has deep roots based on religious and social mores. Archeological digs uncovered artifacts confirming that as far back as prehistoric times, ceremonial whippings were performed in rites of initiation, purification, and fertility, often including other forms of physical suffering.

It makes sense that you and I would continue the deep-seated practice through self-flagellation. The most common form of self-punishment is harsh self-talk. So pay attention.

Whenever you notice your inner dialog has gotten disrespectful, do these three steps:

  1. Say, “Isn’t that an interesting perspective?”
  2. Follow that with, “That may be true, but for now, I’m open to the possibility that it just isn’t true. I’m open to the possibility that what I am is a blessing. I know I never felt that way before, and I may never again, but right now, I am open to the feeling that I am a blessing.”
  3. Allow yourself to really feel the feeling of being a blessing.

Because the truth is, that is who you are, a blessing.
